A day at Carolina Beach!

So my sister is in town visiting me and yesterday Eric and I decided to show her a part of North Carolina that was a little more interesting than Fayetteville and Fort Bragg - Carolina Beach! We would have gone to Myrtle Beach but it's just a little too far away for a day trip.

Unfortunately, the day started out with not-so-great weather. The 2 1/2-hour drive out to the Wilmington/Carolina Beach area was just plagued by rain, which didn't show any signs of letting up for a bit. Not the best weather for a day at the beach, huh?

Well, when we finally got to Carolina Beach our plans to go to the zoo, walk on the boardwalk/beach, and play some mini-golf didn't quite fit with the weather so we improvised and visited the Fort Fisher Aquarium instead. Apparently we weren't the only visitors who were avoiding the rain by going to the aquarium - it was VERY crowded in there. However, we were able to see some cool exhibits and get some fun pictures.

Hannah seemed a little intimidated by the giant lobsters that were there. Can you tell? ;)

Luckily, the sun was coming out by the time we drove away from the aquarium so we stopped at the first place we could to get out, see the Atlantic Ocean, and take some pictures of course!

Eric and Hannah were being a little defiant by walking on the rocks, but at least they were being safe! I'm fairly clumsy so I stayed on the correct side of the chains.

Overall, it wasn't such a bad day. The weather stayed fairly nice most of the afternoon and we were able to walk along the edge of the water for a while. The others were fairly reluctant, but I convinced them to let me take a picture of our feet after the waves washed over them. I thought it was cute!

Anyways, the rain held off until we were about 15 minutes away from home - of course! - but by then we didn't care too much. We had a long day and we were tired, but there were definitely some good times had by all!

What's new?

First and foremost, I've got to share the news that we got to hear the baby's heartbeat for the first time today! I still won't know what we'll be having for another month or two (we'll be happy either way). Anyways, everything at my doctor's appointment went well - I'm healthy and the baby's healthy - and I'll go back again on July 16th. I think at that appointment we'll schedule the ultrasound, which I can't wait for!

Oh, I'm back in North Carolina now. I came back yesterday. My time in Texas went far too quickly, but I'll be back there in a few months so that'll be fun. The day after Hannah's graduation we had some family and friends come over for a little shin-dig with some cake and snacks. I helped my mom set up everything and I must say, I'm awful proud of my table-scape!

It was fun to socialize with everyone, especially those I hadn't seen in a while. But the food was good, the cake was really good, and my sister got some nice presents for graduation including a brand new Honda CR-V!

While I was home, my mom and I went shopping and bought me some clothes that will be very useful (and comfortable) the next few months as my belly starts to grow. I also helped her pack up her classroom now that the school year is over. It's really exciting to think that in about a year I'll be able to start teaching! I found a certification program that allows me to complete the coursework online so I can start it while I'm still here in North Carolina. If everything works out right, I'll be able to teach summer school this time next year :)

What else... Oh! I got to spend some time with my best friend, Laura, while I was home too. She just finished her first year of teaching so she was able to give me a little advice about all of that. I haven't made a lot of friends since I moved to North Carolina - I'm a bit of a homebody - and I've really missed her company. We went out to eat a couple of times and catch up on what we've missed, and luckily I was able to get a picture of us together before I came back.

Anyways, that just about covers it for now. Brodie's trying to get me to play with him so I'm going to do that. Everybody take care!

My little sister's a high school graduate!

I came to Texas a couple of days ago so that I'd be here for my sister's graduation. Well, she finally did it - she graduated! At 5:30 p.m. today she was officially done with high school and she'll be attending Baptist Bible College in Missouri in the fall.

A lot of our family was there, including those pictured above. From left to right, my great aunts (Jean and Alta), my dad (Paul), Hannah, me, my mom (Anita), and my granddaddy (Harry). My grandmother (Glenda) was busy taking pictures so she managed to miss being in that one, but I did get a picture of the two of us together before everybody left.

After the ceremony, our parents took Hannah and I to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory - yum! We had a lot of good food and a lot of fun today! Tonight Hannah's going to Senior Sizzle with some friends (it's an overnight lock-in at a bowling alley where the senior class can play games, bowl, and hopefully come home with some cool prizes).

Tomorrow we'll have some friends and family come over for some snacks and cake, sort of a mini-graduation party so I might have a couple more pictures to post after that. But anyways, congratulations to my sister, Hannah, and my sister-in-law, Kristi! Y'all did it! :)
